"Avatar" is named The Top-Grossing Film of All Time

Critics of the widely promoted and current box office champ "Avatar" dropped their jaws as the film, in 6 weeks, demolished a record previously held by its own director, James Cameron (January 26).

As of Sunday, the anticipated Oscar contender fell $2 million behind "Titanic's" blockbuster record, $1.843 billion, held since 1997.** Worldwide ticket sales from Monday later blew "Titanic's" record out of the water, making its overall sales $1.844 billion-plus. This feat makes "Avatar" the top-grossing film of all time.

It is reported that James Cameron is one of few directors to hold two of the top-grossing films in recorded history.

However, for Cameron to top "Gone With the Wind" ---the number one movie of all time in all other accounts---his blockbuster film would have to make an estimated $6 billion,*** equivalent to the front-runner's $400 million made between 1939 and 1940.
