Rihanna lands 10th No. 1 single w/ 'S&M'

Rihanna and best friend Katy Perry have battled at the top of the charts for weeks with Katy coming out on top, but with a little help from Britney Spears, Rihanna has finally achieved success.

"S&M," the sexually-driven third single from her fifth album LOUD, sits at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making "S&M" her 10th No. 1 single. Its newly released RIHmix featuring Britney Spears--who is now listed as a featured artist on the single--instantly shot to No. 1 on iTunes last week, giving the single a much needed boost. Katy's "E.T." featuring Kanye West has sat at the top of the chart since its debut three weeks ago. It currently sits at No. 2.

With this accomplishment, Rihanna adds many accolades to her already stellar music career, beating out one of her idols in two of them. Billboard reports that Rihanna holds the shortest span between a solo artist's first and 10th No. 1 singles--a mere four years, 11 months and two weeks from when "S.O.S" claimed the No. 1 spot in 2006 (May 13). Her feat tops Mariah Carey's span--5 years and 4 months, beginning with "Vision of Love" on August 4, 1990, and ending with "One Sweet Day" on December 2, 1995. She also bests Mariah as the the youngest artist to have 10 No. 1 singles in Billboard's chart history--Rihanna is 23-years-old and Mariah was 25-years-old, at the time.

In terms of all acts, Rihanna trails The Beatles--one year, eight months and one week--and The Supremes--two years, eight months and three weeks--in the fastest accumulation of 10 No. 1 singles. She is also the ninth artist to accumulate at least 10 No. 1 singles, following The Beatles (20), Mariah Carey (18), Michael Jackson (13), The Supremes (12), Madonna (12), Whitney Houston (11), Janet Jackson (10) and Stevie Wonder (10).

Rihanna's "S&M" may battle another single fairly soon. "Judas," the hotly-anticipated second single from Lady Gaga's album Born This Way, debuted at No. 10 on the Hot 100. It currently sits at No. 1 on iTunes.
